Robber shot dead with own gun
JAKARTA: One of two raiders who attempted to rob three staff members of non-governmental organization Save the Children on Wednesday was shot dead while trying to flee the scene after one of the victims managed to snatch away his gun.
The three staff members, Joko, Suyanto and Yus, had withdrawn Rp 87 million in cash from a bank on Jl. Sudirman, Central Jakarta. The money was in a bag.
As they got out of their car in front of the Save the Children offices on Jl. Kemang Raya Selatan, South Jakarta, at about 2 p.m., they were assailed by two robbers on a motorcycle armed with a gun and a sword.
Suyanto sustained a gash to his arm as he struggled to hold on to the bag. Meanwhile, Joko suddenly lunged at one of the robbers, YJ, and managed to grab his pistol. He then fired at YJ as he attempted to flee, and the second shot hit YJ in the back, killing him. Meanwhile, YJ's accomplice fled the scene on the motorcycle.
According to the Jakarta Police's detectives chief, Sr. Comr. Mathius Salempang, there have been two robberies of bank customers and two bank robberies since the beginning of this year. -- Antara
