Roadwork cuts fixed phone lines

JAKARTA: An underground cable connecting thousands of telephone lines in Tanjung Barat, Pasar Minggu and Jl. TB Simatupang, South Jakarta, was accidentally cut during roadwork to make an underpass in Pasar Minggu area late on Tuesday.

Spokesman of the state telephone company PT Telkom, A. Wahyudi, said the repair of the cable was expected to be completed on Oct. 19.

"To reconnect the fixed lines we have to check on each of the connections," he was quoted as saying by Tempointeraktif.com on Wednesday.

The cable, which was planted two meters underground, has a capacity of 3,000 phone lines.

While still calculating the losses incurred in the incident, Wahyudi said that the company was intending to sue developer PT Wijaya Karya for compensation. -- JP
