Road sinks in Wonosobo

WONOSOBO, Central Java: Traffic between the Wonosobo and Kebumen regencies was brought to a stop from Wednesday to Thursday after a portion of the road in Karanganyar village, Wadaslintang district, Wonosobo, sank after heavy rains.

A local Ministry of Public Works official, Sodikin, told The Jakarta Post some 25 meters of the road had sunk on Thursday. Heavy rains on Sunday caused further sections of the road to sink up to 75 cm.

Wonosobo Regent Sarjono ordered drivers of public transport not to raise fares, Rp 2,000 (US$0.8) per person, because of the disaster.

Repairs to the road are expected to finish today and traffic should be back to normal tomorrow, he said. (wah/ste)
