River widening affects 818 people

The payment of compensation to Tamansari, West Jakarta, residents who have to move to make way for the widening of the Ciliwung River will resume on Aug. 22.

The payment of the compensation was halted last year due to lack of funds.

The Ciliwung River widening project affects 600 residents in Pinangsia, 140 residents in Mangga Besar and 78 residents in Tangki subdistrict.

As of the end of last year, 300 residents of Pinangsia displaced by the project had received total compensation Rp 1 billion (US$461 million).

This year the city administration allocated only Rp 460 million for the payment of the compensation, which is estimated to reach a total of Rp 4 billion. (arf)
