Rights body probes 'religion change'

AMBON, Maluku (JP): The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is currently investigating reports that hundreds of Christians living on Kesui Island are allegedly being forced to change their religion.

Bambang W. Soeharto, the deputy chief of Komnas HAM said after a meeting with Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina on Monday that the civil emergency authorities have made three trips to Kesui island in East Seram, Central Maluku regency.

"They will make a fourth trip this week," he said adding that the commission is also thoroughly investigating the case.

"We cannot issue any comment on the matter as we have to be accurate. After a comprehensive probe is completed, we will state our findings," Bambang, who is also the chief of the Commission for Human Rights Violations and Mediation in Maluku, said.

Another member of Komnas HAM, Insp. Gen. (ret.) Koesparmono Irsan, added that the handling of the case must be expedited to avoid a greater international outcry.

"If the allegations turn out to be true, it could be twisted to become an international matter and we would then be in a lot of trouble," Koesparmono said. (49/edt)
