Riau obscured by thick haze
PEKANBARU, Riau: A thick haze from burning forests and fields has enveloped the Riau capital of Pekanbaru for the past few days, Antara reported on Friday.
The thick smoke obstructs visibility, forcing motorists to turn on their vehicle lamps during the day to avoid collisions.
The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Simpang Tiga Airport, Pekanbaru, said visibility was measured at only 400 meters. The agency has alerted flights connecting Pekanbaru and other provinces.
Meanwhile, the chief of the provincial forestry ministry office, Darminto Soeteno, said intentional burning of forests and fields was found in several districts, namely Kampar, Bengkalis, Indragiri Hulu and Dumai.
"I've contacted all regents to immediately take necessary action," Darminto said, adding that satellite data on Tuesday revealed 165 hot spots, mostly located in Riau. (edt)
