RI wins gold in Arafura Games
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia earned one gold, four silver and two bronze from track and field on the third day of the 1999 Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia.
Antara quoted Indonesia contingent chief Jootje Gosal as saying that John Murray and his teammates won first place in the 4 x 400 meters men relay by clocking 42.37 seconds. John also bagged two silvers in 100m and 200m.
Orpa Ayri and Santi Nelwan contributed two silvers from the 400m and 100m women hurdles respectively. Worsi Wori got the bronze in the women's 200m dash, while Santi and compatriots earned another bronze from the women's 4 x 400m relay.
Jootje said two boxers, Syarief Hidayat and Aswin Cabui, who fought in the light heavyweight (81 kilograms) and light middleweight (71kg) classes, had chances to bring back home two golds as they reached the finals.
Damianus Jordan (48kg), Anthonius Johny (54kg), Willem Papilaya (63.5kg) and Bara Gommies (67kg) will compete in the semifinals on Thursday. (ivy)
