RI wins Five Nation Open bridge tourney

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian men's bridge team took off with flying colors by winning the Five Nation Open tournament in The Hague, the Netherlands, over the weekend.

Juniarto Hadimartono said on Tuesday that the Indonesian men's team participation was a warm-up for the Bermuda Bowl world championships in Bermuda, from Jan. 7 to Jan. 20 next year.

"The same team is still competing in Stockholm, Sweden, and Italy. We have yet to receive the results of the competition in Sweden where three other countries are also taking part. On Tuesday evening, the team will leave for Italy," Juniarto said as quoted by Kompas daily.

The men's team consists of Henky Lasut/Eddy Manoppo, Denny Sakul/Franky Karwur and Santje Panelewen/Robert Tobing.

Juniarto added that Indonesia had also sent its women's team to compete in the Venice Cup world championships in Italy.

The women's team come second, with France as the winner. The championships were participated in by three teams: Indonesia, the Netherlands and France.

The women players were Lusje Bojoh/Joice Mandoland, Sartje Pontoh/Elvita Lasut and Uki Tedjo/Elita Syofian. Lanny and Fera did not compete in Sweden or Italy but instead left home last Friday with Juniarto. (lnt)
