RI urged to promote peaceful Islam

JAKARTA: Rabithah Alam Islami (the World Islamic League) has asked Indonesia to promote the image of Islam as a peaceful religion on the international stage following a series of terrorist attacks by fundamentalists.

Heading a delegation from the organization on a visit to Indonesia, Abdullah bin Abdul Muhsin At Turki, the secretary- general of the organization, said on Saturday that the request was reasonable given that Indonesia was the most populous Muslim country in the world,

After a meeting at the official residence of Vice President Jusuf Kalla, he said that the league had always campaigned to convince people that terrorism was un-Islamic.

The delegation, which had some US$300,000 stolen from a hotel here, has met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and a number of religious leaders. -- JP
