RI to attend South Summit

INDONESIA: Indonesia will take part in the second South Summit of the Group of 77 (G77) and China in Doha, Qatar, from June 15 to June 17.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yuri Thamrin said the meeting would discuss development issues and poverty eradication efforts, and would issue the measures with a plan of action. Foreign minister Hassan Wirayuda will represent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the summit.

"The meeting will issue a document on the Havana Program of Action, and the southern countries' strategy to eradicate poverty and to increase the economic capacity in developing countries through technical cooperation among the member countries," he said on Friday.

The Havana Program of Action, declared in the South summit in 2000, stresses the importance of further promoting South-South cooperation in human resources, knowledge and technology, capacity building, finance, trade and investment.

The G77 was established in June 15, 1964, by 77 developing countries. -- JP
