RI scores largest scholarship batch

JAKARTA: Seventy Indonesian scholars and students have been granted Fulbright scholarships to study in the United States, the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation announced on Thursday.

The Fulbright recipients will study in fields such as American Literature, Food Technology, Religious Studies, Education, Business Administration and Law. The students, who come from higher education institutions throughout Indonesia, will join 27 Indonesian scholars already enrolled in U.S. universities last year.

The foundation said more than 40 U.S. scholars, students and professors would travel to Indonesia to take up teaching and research assignments throughout the country.

"This is the largest single-year total in the Fulbright Program's 53 year history in Indonesia," the foundation said in a statement.

Two language programs would start this year, it said. One would bring recent American university graduates here to help teach English at high schools, while the other would recruit Indonesians to assist in the teaching of Indonesian at several U.S. universities. -- JP
