RI keeps Fed Cup winning streak

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia clinched another 3-0 victory over New Zealand on Tuesday in the Fed Cup Asia Oceania Group One qualifying round at the Yang Min Tennis Center in Kao Hsiung, Chinese Taipei.

Romana Tedjakusuma, Indonesia's No. 2 women's singles player, started the onslaught by crushing Leanne Baker 6-1, 6-1 in the first match. Indonesia's top women's singles player Wynne Prakusya followed the victory by defeating Shelly Stephens 6-0, 6-3.

Indonesia sealed the win when veteran Yayuk Basuki teamed up with Wynne to beat Baker and Stephens 6-0, 6-2.

Earlier on Monday, Indonesia defeated Pacific Oceania 3-0 in a Group A match, which also includes India and South Korea. Indonesia will face South Korea on Wednesday and India on Thursday.

"Indonesia has slightly better chances because our players have equal skills and strength," tennis observer Dedy Prasetyo told reporters.

"But they must be careful with one or two players from South Korea and India who may pose a threat." (nvn)
