RI Embassy helps seamen's families

JAKARTA: The families of two deceased Indonesian seamen -- Samsuri and Suryadi -- received insurance payouts recently with the help of Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, the embassy said recently.

"The heirs of Samsuri and Suryadi received S$111,000 and S$83,878.20 respectively during a simple ceremony held at East Java's manpower office in Surabaya from the embassy's first secretary (protocol and counselor) Fachry Sulaiman," the embassy said in a statement, a copy of which was sent to The Jakarta Post.

The two seamen were killed in a fire in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on July 18, 2004. The accident occurred when they were on duty on board the Singapore registered MT Setia Jaya tanker in Colombo.

The families of Samsuri and Suryadi expressed their gratitude to the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore for helping with the insurance claim, the release said. -- JP
