RI crew saved from ship mishap

JAKARTA: An Indonesian cargo vessel M.V. Kalimantan Express carrying 3,000 tons of pulses from Myanmar to Calcutta sank in the Bengal Bay on Wednesday, but all its 22 crew members were safe, Antara reported on Thursday.

Director of Calcutta Port Trust's Marine Department, Gautam Sen, said the ship's engine room was damaged during a severe storm.

Another Indonesian vessel NV Medan Express, which was sailing nearby, rescued the 22-member crew, Sen said.

The ship ultimately sank on Wednesday along with the entire cargo, he added. (rms)
