RI calls for UN corruption code

JAKARTA: The Indonesian government has urged the United Nations to speed up finalization of an international convention on corruption and hopes that UN member countries can sign the pact by 2003.

Head of economic affairs at the Indonesian Permanent Representative office in the UN Bali Moniaga said in New York on Tuesday that finalization of the convention was urgently needed for the creation of international cooperation to fight against corruption.

"With the existence of the international convention, Indonesia will be able to participate actively in fighting corruption, not just inside the country but also among the international community," Bali said.

He reiterated that such an international convention would help to curb corrupt practices that might involve international financial agencies. -- Antara
