RI breaks breast-feeding record

KEDIRI, East Java: Mothers in the East Java town of Kediri have reason to be proud. They broke the world record on Wednesday for the largest number of women ever to breast-feed their babies simultaneously.

The Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) says that over four hundred mothers took part in the event, eclipsing a similar attempt made by Australia some time ago as the Australian mothers had refused to perceive the event as a competition.

The founder of MURI, Jaya Suprana, said that to celebrate World Mother's Milk Week, 497 mothers in Kediri had simultaneously breast-fed their babies in a local contest.

"As far as the number is concerned, the record is undisputed," Suprana was quoted by Antara as saying.

MURI manager Paulus Angka said the organizers had intended to enlist at least 500 contestants.

"However, 497 was enough to break a world record," he said. Antara
