Results of test on bay water expected

JAKARTA: The Jakarta Police are expecting the results of a comparative test on water and coral samples taken from the Thousand Islands waters and around a rig of the China National Offshore Oil Corp. by the end of May.

"The National Police Headquarters forensic laboratory is currently doing tests using 'fingerprint technic' to identify chemical substances in the samples," city police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo said over the weekend.

Police took samples of the polluted seawater, coral an oil spill and oil extracted by CNOOC from January through April.

"We have questioned 17 witnesses and will question eight others," he said. "We hope we can identify the suspects by the end of June."

Thousands of fish had washed up dead around the bay in past weeks. -- JP

Four suspected drug dealers nabbed

BEKASI: Four men were arrested on Saturday morning for the possession of nine packets of marijuana in an East Bekasi shopping center.

Police identified the men as Adit, 27; Erik M., 23; Teddy, 20; and Deni, 18.

Bekasi Police chief of detectives Comr. Rasino said on Sunday that the arrests were made possible due to a tip-off from locals.

Plainclothes detectives approached the suspects as potential buyers in the shopping center and apprehended them. The four did not resist arrest.

Rasino said the suspects had refused to reveal from where the marijuana came. They will be charged with violating Article 62 of Law No. 5/1997 on psychotropic substances, under which they could face a maximum five years in jail or a Rp 100 million (US$11,111) fine. -- Antara
