Respiratory problems hit City Hall

JAKARTA: The most common ailment suffered among the city administration employees is respiratory problems, according to data from the City Hall health clinic.

Head of the health clinic, Dr. Wardini Surijit, said during a health seminar on Monday that respiratory problems topped the list of illnesses suffered by employees at 38.9 percent. The research was based on a comprehensive study of medical checkups and treatments provided to employees, beritajakarta.com reported. Data in October showed that 91,181 employees worked at city administration offices.

Other common illnesses included hypertension (7.81 percent), gastritis (7.78 percent), muscular system ailments (5.46 percent), skin allergies (4.99 percent), diarrhea (4.4 percent), skin infections (4.11 percent), asthma (1.89 percent) and diabetes (1.86 percent).

Wardini said that the health of office workers is affected by the characteristics of modern architecture, such as the placement and number of windows, the ventilation system, acoustics, usage of air conditioners, and the use of office equipment, such as computers. --JP
