Residents to sue police officers

JAKARTA: Residents of Kelapa Gading Permai housing complex in North Jakarta plan to sue National Police chief Gen. Sutanto and Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani for what they consider to be discrimination in implementing the law.

"The arrest and detention of Danu Dharmawan, who opposed the construction of Kali Betik bridge in Kelapa Gading is concrete proof of how police still side with the powerful and not the weak," chairman of Consumer Legal Aid (LBH Konsumen) Bilher Situmorang was quoted by Antara as saying on Sunday.

Bilher did not say when the residents would file the suit.

Danu, 59, was arrested last Friday and is now being detained at the Jakarta Police detention center.

He reportedly opposed the construction of a bridge by PT Subur Brothers which is currently developing the Gading Grande Compound located next to Kelapa Gading Permai housing complex.

Kelapa Gading Permai residents, including Danu, have reportedly opposed the bridge construction due to the potential floods it may cause. --JP
