Residents oppose slaughter house

TANGERANG: Residents of Pondok Kacang village in Pondok Aren, here, protested on Friday the presence of a slaughter house in the neighborhood, which they said was polluting the environment.

The group also said the livestock slaughter house was illegal.

"We have repeatedly expressed our objections to the slaughter house owner for a long time now, but he ignored our complaints," Sanif, one of the protesting residents told The Jakarta Post.

There is no sign that animals are being slaughtered in the building, but locals claim that at least 20 cows are slaughtered there every night, as evident by the carcasses dumped nearby.

They demanded that the regental administration close the slaughter house as they are afraid that the decomposing carcasses could spread disease.--JP
