Residents 'no' to apartments

SEMARANG: Hundreds of residents in the Bandarhardjo
subdistrict in North Semarang protested against a plan to move
them to apartments built by the city administration.

They hoisted banners and sprawled graffiti on their houses and
roofs. One banner read "I don't like apartments."

The protests surfaced when a resident heard that the
administration was sending a team to inform them of the plan.

Sayono, a Bandarhardjo resident, said their income was too
small to pay the installments for the apartments.

The administration's public relations officer, Harini, said
the attitude of residents may be caused by lack of understanding
of the government's good intention. (har)
