Residents complain of ID fees

TANGERANG: Residents of Cipondoh subdistrict are complaining that the local subdistrict office is illegally charging them Rp 6,000 (US cents 70) when they apply for identity cards.

Employees of the subdistrict office demand Rp 6,000 from residents who apply for IDs, or the subdistrict office chief will not sign the ID card, Saidah, a resident of Cipondoh, said on Monday.

She said the subdistrict office staff was also requiring residents applying for ID cards to prove that they have paid their property taxes.

"It's ridiculous as it goes against the municipal administration's attempt to help residents obtain ID cards free of charge," she said.

The municipality secretary, Achmad Sudjai, confirmed that residents of Tangerang were not required to pay for ID cards.

"Subdistrict offices are still failing to provide good service to residents applying for ID cards," he said. -- JP
