Residents complain about bad smells

JAKARTA: Residents in Ancol subdistrict, North Jakarta, have been complaining about bad odors, allegedly coming from the liquid waste dumped by a nearby cold storage company, PT Wirontono Baru, which stores exported fish and shrimp products.

The people covered a 100-meter section of the sewer, from where the bad smell was emanating, with plastic sheeting, while urging the local administration to take action against the company or whoever was responsible for the pollution, beritajakarta.com reported on Monday.

In response to the complaints, the North Jakarta environmental office has questioned PT Wirontono Baru, but the company claimed to have dealt with its waste properly, according to head of administration at the office Sjahrul.

He said that his office had taken samples of the waste produced by the company and also by nearby PT Indofood, and sent the samples to the laboratory for further examination.

Sjahrul said that his office would also check the waste produced by other companies in the area. --JP
