Residents block street over land dispute

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Dozens of heirs of the sultan of Tebaununggu blocked, here on Thursday, a road leading to the Sanggoleo Golf Course, following a prolonged dispute over land with the local administration.

The dispute began a few months ago, when the heirs demanded compensation from the administration for the land where the golf course was built. They claimed the land was formerly owned by the sultan of Tebaununggu in the 18th century.

But, Yusuf Mundu, a senior official of South Sulawesi provincial administration, said compensation would be paid only if the heirs could present legal documents concerning ownership of the land, which is located in Baruga, here. -- JP
