Reshuffle, for what?
President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who returns home on June 21 from her two-week European tour, might face a new problem: Demands for a Cabinet reshuffle.
Some observers have said Megawati's 10-month-old Cabinet has no clear vision. The idea of a reshuffle emerged following State Minister of National Development Planning Kwik Kian Gie's objection to the extension of Indonesia's contract with the International Monetary Fund.
Another minister in the spotlight is defense minister Matori Abdul Djalil, whose performance is said to be ineffective.
It is worrisome that the suggestion of a Cabinet reshuffle could be a new bargaining chip for members of the political elite. A reshuffle is the head of state's prerogative, but Megawati must prioritize public interest in making decisions.
