Rerouted traffic in Kota

JAKARTA (JP): In an attempt to reduce traffic jams in the downtown Kota area of West Jakarta, the City Traffic and Land Transportation Agency will change the traffic arrangements at the intersection near Kota railway station in early September, an official said on Monday.

Kota railway intersection consists of Jl. Asemka in the west, Jl. Pintu Besar Utara in the north, Jl. Pintu Besar Selatan in the south, and Jl. Jembatan Batu in the east.

"Motorists from Jl. Pintu Besar Selatan heading to Jl. Mangga Dua can make a right turn instead of making the turn through the one-way Jl. Pintu Besar Utara and Jl. Stasion Kota, as regulated in the current pattern," the agency's head Buyung Atang said in a written statement.

"The agency will also reduce traffic conflicts in the Kota intersection by using new traffic light sequences," he added.

The current pattern causes overcrowding on Jl. Stasion Kota as all vehicles from the south heading to Jl. Mangga Dua have to pass through this street.

In the new traffic light sequences, its first phase will allow vehicles from Jl. Pintu Besar Selatan to either go through Jl. Pintu Besar Utara or take a right turn into Jl. Jembatan Batu.

In the next phase, motorists heading south from Jl. Stasion Kota can either go south through Jl. Pintu Besar Selatan or take a right turn to Jl. Asemka.

Finally, motorists from Jl. Jembatan Batu can choose to go west to Jl. Asemka or take a right turn into Jl. Pintu Besar Utara. At the same time, motorists from Jl. Asemka can also make a left turn into Jl. Pintu Besar Utara.

"We also request all motorists to obey the new traffic signs and directions given by our field officials," Buyung concluded in his written statement. (nvn)
