Regent reported to antigraft body

JAKARTA: A local corruption watch body went to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday to report the previous Kutai Kartanegara regent for alleged graft.

Some 30 activists from the Kutai Kartanegara Anticorruption Committee briefed commission member Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas about a fictitious construction project at Kutai airport last year that allegedly involved then regent Syaukani HR. It group said that it inflicted losses of Rp 119 billion (US$12.5 million) on the local government.

Syaukani has also been linked to an alleged mark-up in a renovation project and Rp 1 billion in missing election funds.

The anticorruption group said that they had written to the KPK in connection with the alleged graft last November, but had not received a response. -- Antara
