Refugee shot on border

ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: East Timorese refugee Manuel Martins, 45, was seriously injured in the right thigh on Thursday after being shot, allegedly by a member of United Nations Peacekeeping Force on the border of East Timor and Webendera village in the province.

He was quickly rushed to the nearby hospital in Belu regency.

According to Antara, Manuel, a native of Balibo regency in East Timor, was shot when he passed 20 meters over the border into East Timor to collect firewood.

It is the latest incident on the border between East Nusa Tenggara and East Timor since the former Indonesian province opted for independence. (prb)
