Records broken at world powerlifting meet

JAKARTA (JP): The second day of the junior world powerlifting
championships in Nusa Dua, Bali saw 13 records shattered as
Russia kept its huge overall lead at the four-day meet.

Russian musclewoman Svetlana Telesva romped through with two
record breaking lifts which carried her to victory in the 40-
kilogram category on Thursday night.

She squatted 140.5 kilograms and lifted a total of 350
kilograms to improve on the records of 140 kilograms and 330
kilograms, respectively, she set in Canada last October.

Compatriot Elena Iamskikh continued the Russian show of force
with two new world junior records in the 48-kilogram division.
Iamskikh bettered her six-month-old total lift of 350 kilograms
with a titanic 400-kilogram effort.

Iamskikh's Taiwanese rival Ju Yang Shu stole a gold medal in
the squat with a record breaking lift of 145 kilograms.

Fellow Taiwanese Yeh Chao Chen dominated the 90-kilogram
contest, shattering three records on her way to snatching three
golds.

Yeh scored 128.5 kilograms in the squat, 195 in the deadlift
and a total lift of 551 kilograms to best the records of 120
kilograms, 190 kilograms and 530 kilograms, respectively, she
established in the last meet.

American Lesley Look denied Yeh a clean sweep as she won the
bench press event with a lift of 107 kilograms, two kilograms
heavier than the old record of 105 she set last year.

The Antara news agency reported that the other new records
were set by 75-kilogram lifter Anne Stiklesto of Norway and
German Eva Engskar from the 56-kilogram category. Stiklesto beat
her deadlift record of 211 kilograms with 215, while Engskar
produced a new bench press record of 97.5 kilograms.

Fielding Gusti Ayu Rae Mulyati, Agustina and Puji Heryati,
host Indonesia racked up three golds and five silvers yesterday
to remain a distant second, far behind Russia's 18 golds, five
silvers and six bronzes. (amd)
