Records broken at world powerlifting meet

JAKARTA (JP): The second day of the junior world powerlifting championships in Nusa Dua, Bali saw 13 records shattered as Russia kept its huge overall lead at the four-day meet.

Russian musclewoman Svetlana Telesva romped through with two record breaking lifts which carried her to victory in the 40- kilogram category on Thursday night.

She squatted 140.5 kilograms and lifted a total of 350 kilograms to improve on the records of 140 kilograms and 330 kilograms, respectively, she set in Canada last October.

Compatriot Elena Iamskikh continued the Russian show of force with two new world junior records in the 48-kilogram division. Iamskikh bettered her six-month-old total lift of 350 kilograms with a titanic 400-kilogram effort.

Iamskikh's Taiwanese rival Ju Yang Shu stole a gold medal in the squat with a record breaking lift of 145 kilograms.

Fellow Taiwanese Yeh Chao Chen dominated the 90-kilogram contest, shattering three records on her way to snatching three golds.

Yeh scored 128.5 kilograms in the squat, 195 in the deadlift and a total lift of 551 kilograms to best the records of 120 kilograms, 190 kilograms and 530 kilograms, respectively, she established in the last meet.

American Lesley Look denied Yeh a clean sweep as she won the bench press event with a lift of 107 kilograms, two kilograms heavier than the old record of 105 she set last year.

The Antara news agency reported that the other new records were set by 75-kilogram lifter Anne Stiklesto of Norway and German Eva Engskar from the 56-kilogram category. Stiklesto beat her deadlift record of 211 kilograms with 215, while Engskar produced a new bench press record of 97.5 kilograms.

Fielding Gusti Ayu Rae Mulyati, Agustina and Puji Heryati, host Indonesia racked up three golds and five silvers yesterday to remain a distant second, far behind Russia's 18 golds, five silvers and six bronzes. (amd)
