Rare animals on exhibit
KENDARI, S.E. Sulawesi: Two anoa (Bubalus deprecornis), or dwarf buffaloes, are being featured at the ongoing 1997 development expo here to motivate the local community to conserve the nearly extinct animals, Antara reported yesterday.
The buffaloes, male and female, are located in an open space at the back of the Kolaka district pavilion at the exhibition, according to Kolaka district head, Adel Berty.
An anoa, which is unique to Southeast Sulawesi, has sharp horns, fur like a cat, a head like a horse and a tail like a pig.
The animal, which is the provincial mascot, is a favorite among locals and foreign tourists visiting the expo, Adel said.
He said it was hoped that local people would help protect the animal after they see some at the exhibit. (swe)
