Railway tracks to be expanded
JAKARTA: Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa said that his office would expand the railway tracks of commuter trains in Greater Jakarta from one or two tracks to four tracks by 2008.
He said his office would also increase the number of train cars available for commuters.
"The expansion policy is part of the energy-saving drive," he said after attending a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
Hatta did not mention the amount of money needed to finance the project.
According to the minister, 5 million people travel from one place to another in Greater Jakarta every day, but only some 500,000 use commuter trains. --JP
