Radio, TV to bring Java homes

Evi Mariani, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Are you worried that you can't get ticket to the upcoming Java Jazz Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center? Concerned that you'll miss a performance because of other commitments?

Well, no need to worry, because television and radio stations in major cities across the country have secured rights to broadcast selected pre-recorded performances from the biggest- ever jazz event ever held here.

The prime reason for the media fuss about this three-day event is the commercial benefits, with advertisers eagerly eying opportunities to air their ads in program breaks.

For three days, starting March 4 through to March 6, jazz aficionados will be thoroughly indulged, with world class musicians including the godfather of soul James Brown, Eric Benet, Tania Maria, Earth Wind & Fire, George Duke, Incognito and many more. Prominent local jazz muso's will also take part in the event.

However, leave aside the business considerations and just check out the treat for those jazz enthusiasts who do not have the time or opportunity to see the performances live on stage, will get from the efforts made by television and radio stations.

Just turn on your television or radio and keep up with reports surrounding the event, as well as recorded performances of your favorite musicians.

As of Thursday, day one before the event, some radio and TV officials were still busy getting the deals to present the best performances to your home or your cars.

"We've already got a deal to air live performances of Ruth Sahanaya and Jeff Kashiwa," Rudy Eko Heryanto, Project Officer for Java Jazz Festival at Trijaya Network, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

He said that the schedule was yet to be fixed, but Trijaya plans to dedicate three hours every night during the three-day festival to broadcast either recorded or live performances.

"We are trying to get the deal to air George Duke and Glenn Fredly live," he said.

Trijaya Network owns radio stations in six large cities throughout the country including Bandung and Jakarta.

Meanwhile Trans TV, revealed that they would air about 10 recorded performances sometime in the near future.

"The partnership with Java Jazz allows us to broadcast some recorded performances later after the festival. However, we haven't been informed yet about what performances we will be getting," Trans TV's creative producer Erna Ade said.

"We will set the broadcast schedule later," she added, but gave no detailed schedule for when the station would air the jazz packages.

However, if you are not patient enough to wait for the festival to finish before listening to some great jazz sounds, try the online radio streaming at www.javajazzfestival.com.
