Racism, a sad reality

Dewi Anggraeni in her article Corby and Australians' anger (The Jakarta Post, June 3) writes, in response to my article, (which attempted to explain, at least in part, the Australian reaction to the Corby verdict) "I saw an angle which Goodfellow, being an Australian Indonesianist, may have overlooked".

Ibu (Madame), I sadly agree with your assertion that there is indeed a racist undercurrent in Australian society. This is painfully clear to me as an Australian and I am ashamed of it.

In contrast there was enormous dignity in the way your President responded to the insults of a vocal Australian minority on your national dignity.

In a 20-year association with Indonesia I have experienced unfailing courtesy, hospitality, acceptance and respect. We Australians, who are so often kasar (unsophisticated), have much to learn from our neighbor Indonesia.
