Racers cause Saturday night peril

JAKARTA: The number of amateur motorcycle racers in Tangerang is on the rise, especially on Saturday nights, but local residents say Saturday night is not alright for the dangerous races.

Residents have long complained about the noise and danger at the illegal racing circuits and are upset that the police do not do much to stop them.

"We call upon the police to crack down on illegal racers because they could kill people," Mrs. Saiman, 38, said on Wednesday.

She added that there was an increase in the number of racers getting involved.

The speed demons especially like to emulate Mr. Rossi on Bintaro Raya road in Pondok Aren, Jl. Belakang Citra Raya, Jl. Beringin Raya and Jl. Samping Barat, Lippo Karawaci.

Most of the racers do not wear helmets or other safety equipment.

The Pondok Aren police recently arrested some on Jl. Bintaro Raya, but released them later.

Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Harry Prastowo promised that starting next week, the police would launch a massive operation against everyone involved in illegal activities.

"We will take stern measures against the illegal racers and they could be punished. If necessary, their motorcycles will be seized and kept at our police station," he said without elaborating on possible punishment.--JP
