R. Arsyad elected S. Sumatra governor

PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: Commodore Rosihan Arsyad was elected governor of South Sumatra yesterday for the 1998/2003 term.

Rosihan defeated two other candidates in the election held by the provincial legislature, receiving 23 of the 45 votes cast.

His two rivals, Nangali Solihin and Machmud Hasjim, received 16 and three votes respectively.

Rosihan replaces Ramli Hasan Basri, who served a maximum two terms as governor, Antara reported.
