Quake kills five, ruins 2,800 houses

PANDEGLANG, West Java: The death toll of Tuesday's earthquake which shook most of West Java and the Greater Jakarta area has now risen to five people, all of whom from the town of Pandeglang.

Antara reported that a total of 2,800 houses were reported damaged in Tuesday's earthquake measuring 6.0 on Richter scale.

There were no details about the casualties and the causes of their death. Search and rescue workers are still helping victims, particularly those living in remote areas.

The news agency quoted a local government official as saying that seven subdistricts in the area were hard hit by the quake.

Financial losses were estimated at Rp 27.6 billion. (amd)
