Quake jolts Jakarta, West Sumatra

JAKARTA (JP): An earthquake rocked Greater Jakarta for about 10 minutes late on Sunday night, causing panic among people living in high-rise buildings.

The first tremors lasted for about eight minutes at 11:30 p.m., followed by aftershocks which lasted for two minutes. No damage or injuries were reported.

Some panic-stricken people rushed out of their homes.

The Meteorological and Geophysics Agency could not be reached for details about the quake.

The quake was also felt in some West Sumatra cities, such as Padang, Padang Panjang and Bukittinggi.

An earthquake monitoring agency in Padang Panjang recorded the quake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale.

A resident at an apartment on Jl. Rasuna Said in South Jakarta told The Jakarta Post that she waited for a while before returning to her apartment on the 21st floor for fear of aftershocks. (amd)
