Purwokerto trains bring profit

PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): The regional office of state- owned railway company PT KAI, overseeing Purwokerto and its surrounding area, enjoyed Rp 9 billion in net profits last year. This was Rp 3 billion more than the intended target, a company official said here on Thursday.

Spokesman for the regional office, Supriadi, told The Jakarta Post that profits were mostly reaped from executive and business class trains which stop in Purwokerto on a daily basis.

"The most lucrative is the executive class Purwojaya on the Cilacap-Purwokerto-Jakarta route, which carries 800 passengers," Supriadi said.

According to Supriadi the economy class trains brought in no profits at all. "We suffer financial losses from these particular trains because the government decides the fare and we only implement the operation." (45/sur)
