Public told to vaccinate pets

TANGERANG: The local administration is calling on people in the regency to vaccinate their pets, especially dogs, cats and monkeys, against rabies.

Head of the team in charge of the antirabies campaign, Febia Setianingsih, said she would visit 11 villages in Pondok Aren to inform people about the need to vaccinate their pets against rabies.

She said that animals with rabies did not like water and were sensitive to light, wind and sound. They also salivate excessively. Human beings can become infected if bitten by a rabid animal.

"If your pet appears restless or howls, be alert. It may have rabies," Febia, who is a veterinarian, said.

Many pet owners do not make a habit of taking their pets to see a veterinarian. --Antara
