Public kitchen banner removed

JAKARTA (JP): Ten public order officers removed a banner marking a public kitchen set up by the Urban Poor Consortium (UPC) in Kampung Rawa area, West Jakarta, on Tuesday morning.

"The officers implored the poor people there to allow them do their job or otherwise they would be dismissed," Berkah Gumulya, a member of UPC, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

However, about three hours later the banner was raised again, he said.

The public kitchen, which was established on Monday, is able to cater up to 1,000 meals a day for needy people, especially those who have lost their jobs due to the massive raids against street vendors which began last month.(04)
