PSIS fan dies from injuries
JAKARTA (JP): One of five injured soccer fans of PSIS Semarang soccer team died on Sunday after four days of intensive care at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.
Jimmy Riyanto Wibowo's death brought to 11 the toll of PSIS fans who died from being crushed by trains or from electrocution.
He was first treated at Pasar Rebo Hospital in East Jakarta after being hit by a speeding Jakarta-Bogor train at the Lenteng Agung railway track in South Jakarta on Thursday morning. He suffered severe head wounds and injuries over his body.
He was experiencing breathing difficulties when he was transferred later to Cipto on the same day.
His mother, Santi Meliana, who arrived in the capital after hearing of the accident, took Jimmy's corpse on Monday in an ambulance for burial in Mataram, North Semarang.
Santi said her son frequently misbehaved, including betting on soccer matches.
"Prior to his departure to Jakarta, he asked for Rp 3,000 (35 U.S. cents) from his brother," the widow said.
PSIS official Farchan said Jimmy's hospital, transportation and burial expenses would be paid by the Semarang administration.
The status of the other injured PSIS fans is unknown.
The 10 other fatalities were immediately transported to Central Java on Friday. Their bills also were paid by the Semarang administration.
Thousands of soccer fans, locally called bonek, from East and Central Java thronged to Jakarta on Thursday to watch the semifinal of their favorite teams during the Indonesia Soccer League at the Senayan stadium.
Following the fatal accidents and fear of possible unrest, the authorities abruptly changed the time and venue for the final to the North Sulawesi capital of Manado on Friday. (01)
