Protests continue, affect trade

MERAUKE, Irian Jaya: An outbreak of violence which erupted here following news of the sinking of the Bimas Raya II ferry on Wednesday continued on Friday, with protesters damaging several government and private buildings.

The protests started in reaction to the sea tragedy, which claimed over 200 lives.

However, protests quickly took on a political tone as demonstrators began pressing for other demands such as independence.

All major business activities in the city have ceased for two days as demonstrators continue to also occupy the local council building. (04)
