Protesters, Police clash in Bogor

BOGOR: Around 1,500 Klapanunggal residents and Bogor Police clashed on Friday at the Bogor Council during the swearing-in ceremony of the regency's councillors.

The residents were staging a protest, demanding that the new councillors annul the operating permit issued by the administration for the dump in Bojong village, Klapanunggal district.

The opening of the dump, which will accommodate some 2,000 tons of daily waste from Jakarta, has been delayed many times because of residents' strong opposition on fears it will cause environmental damage and health problems.

The clash became heated upon the arrest of Herman Asyari, who threw a stone at the police officers.

Four protestors succeeded in meeting with councillors to deliver their demand. -- Antara
