Protest decries gambling dens

TANGERANG (JP): Dozens of students from an Islamic college here visited the Tangerang Regency office on Thursday, demanding the closure of several alleged gambling dens in the city.

The students' spokesman, Nasrudin, said they demanded that Regent Agus Djunara close down the gambling dens located in several areas, including Balaraja and Mauk districts.

"If the regent cannot close down the gambling dens, it's better that he resign."

The students also demanded that the regent shut several amusement centers allegedly fronting for prostitution.

He said the students along with Muslim preachers used lectures and religious discussions to urge the public not to patronize the places.

"We have also reported the matter to the police, but not a single response has been received," he said.

Meanwhile, regency spokeswoman Ena Karlina said the regent had instructed all district and subdistrict heads to close the alleged gambling and prostitution dens.

"The district and subdistrict heads are required to report to the regent every week," Ena said. (41/jun)
