Protest continues at Satya Wacana
SALATIGA, Central Java: Some 1,000 students protested at the troubled Satya Wacana Christian University yesterday, demanding that the management restore peace to allow the learning-teaching process to take place.
The students, most of whom are members of the Pro-Democracy Group which reject the dismissal of lecturer Arief Budiman and the leadership of rector John JOI Ihalauw, demanded the that university's foundation refrain from firing lecturers and deans who have different opinions on how to put an end to the conflict.
Dr. Limson Singalang, spokesman for the group, said that the dismissals have disadvantaged the students and other lecturers, because it is difficult to find good quality staff members.
He pointed out that ever since the conflict began more than a year ago due to what the group considered the "undemocratic" election of the rector, the studying and teaching processes have been seriously disrupted. (har/pwn)
