Prosecution wants 15 years for BNI suspect

JAKARTA: Prosecutors asked the court on Friday to sentence a suspect in the Rp 1 billion Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) scandal to 15 years in prison.

The prosecutors also demanded that the suspect, identified as HIAD, pay a Rp 1 billion fine.

"The suspect signed 11 fake letters of credit and handed the documents to the BNI branch in Kebayoran Baru. The crime caused US$9.3 million in state losses," the indictment read.

On hearing the charge, the defendant clapped his hands and accused the prosecutors of "telling lies".

Presiding judge Johanes Suhadi adjourned the trial until Nov. 8, at which time the court will hear from the defense. -- Antara
