Prominent GAM leader surrenders to TNI

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: After months on the run, a prominent leader of the rebel Free Aceh Movement (GAM) has finally surrendered to the Indonesian military.

Acting spokesman for the Iskandar Muda military command, Major Achmad Husein, said that Teungky Ayub, 51, GAM's self-styled deputy governor for Aceh Rayeuk, surrendered to military personnel in Kruemak village, Aceh Besar regency, late on Thursday due to a lack of food.

The frail leader is now being treated by medical personnel attached to the military command. -- Antara
