From: Tempo InteractiveTEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Suryadi Sasmita, the Indonesia Businessmen Association’s secretary general says the plan to apply a progressive tariff at Tanjung Priok Port is not the solution to reducing the number of overloaded containers.
The state-run port company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) previously planned to remove the containers from the port by force. The containers, which have been in the port for three days, will be moved to the second line, or a space to store containers outside the port premises. It has been suggested that containers in the port for more than five days will be subject to the progressive tariff.
The overloading of containers occurs because Tanjung Priok has not been expanded to cope with increasing activity at the port.
