Private university awards scholarships

JAKARTA (JP): A private university in Central Jakarta awarded scholarships totaling Rp 495.6 million (US$203,950) to 413 students yesterday.

The University of Tarumanegara presented the scholarships to students with high grades who struggled to pay for tuition.

The students received Rp 600,000 discounts on their tuitions each semester.

Two hundred and five recipients were from the faculties of economics and 125 were from engineering.

Tarumanegara's standard per semester fees are Rp 920,000 for the Faculty of Economics and Rp 1,125,000 for the Faculty of Engineering.

Students who excelled in sport and culture were among those receiving the scholarships.

"Among them are also students from some regions which have forged cooperation with us," the university rector's A.K. Dahono said at a ceremony for National Education Day.

Established in 1959, the university had graduated 18,872 students who had mostly found jobs, he said.

"Many of them have become entrepreneurs, some have continued their parents' businesses," Dali Santun Naga, the rector's deputy for academic affairs, said. (03)
