Priok port has cargo center

JAKARTA (JP): State port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Pelindo II), which is responsible for the management of Jakarta's Tanjung Priok port, has started operating a new cargo distribution center to facilitate container flow through the port, especially for shipments from Japan.

The port's spokesman Sudjarwo said yesterday that the new distribution center had been jointly built by Pelindo and the International Post Cargo Distribution of Japan (IPCD), according to Antara.

"The project was completed in 17 months. The 11,385 hectare complex comprises 9,343 hectares of warehouses, 1,740 hectares of offices, and 311 hectares of other facilities," he said.

He said that 50 percent of the warehousing facilities would be reserved for IPCD members and the remaining 50 percent could be used by other companies.

To encourage Japanese traders, IPCD members would be offered a 30 percent discount on fees for using the new distribution center until the year 2007.

The distribution center has large capacity container cranes, and on-line information facilities, which will link the center with banks and container terminals, Sudjarwo added. (gis)
